Being a “green” city is the new way of life, and the city of Palm Coast is leading the way.

Improving environmental performance through educational activities for the community, in-house practices and incentives and ordinances, Palm Coast was awarded a Gold Level Designation in 2010 for achieving the prestigious Green Local Government status from the Florida Green Building Coalition.

This Designation was again elevated, as Palm Coast was selected to receive the 2010 regional award for Excellence in Environmental Stewardship from the Northeast Florida Regional Council, a dynamic network of local governance serving seven Florida counties and association municipalities.

The award recognizes the city for its primary focus on long-term protection, conservation and enhancement of the region’s natural resources. It also acknowledges environmental stewardship in the region through demonstrated leadership or the promotion of environmental awareness.

Denise Bevan, senior environmental planner for the city, said she hopes receiving the award will inspire other local governments and organizations to “lead by example.”

“Receipt of the (award) validates Palm Coast’s steadfast determination to be recognized by peers and colleagues as a sustainable community,” Bevan said.

Palm Coast’s 2010 initiatives:

-- Achieving the highest point criterion among all Florida cities.
-- Adopting a Green Development Incentive Program Ordinance.
-- Implementing a public battery recycling program.
-- Adopting a water bottle plastic reduction strategy.
-- Creating a student environmental awareness program (CHIRP) that promotes conservation.
-- Recognizing community businesses and residences that meet landscape and structural beautification standards.
-- Coordinating the City’s new intricate bicycle/pedestrian trails to connect residents, businesses and schools.

At theTuesday, April 19, City Council meeting, the Mayor Jon Netts and council members accepted the Environmental Stewardship Award from Brian Teeple, CEO of the Northeast Florida Regional Council.

“Sustainability is a way of life in Palm Coast,” Teeple said. “The city has gone beyond just governing, as they are truly leading by example.”
