The upcoming Lori Fund Golf Tournament, scheduled for 9 a.m. on Feb. 21 is expected to generate $100k in funds for the Special Operations Warrior Foundation as well as other select U.S. Army veteran groups. The tournament will be held at the Ocean Course at Hammock Beach Resort at 200 Ocean Crest Drive, Palm Coast.
Frankie Petruno started the Lori Fund, a 501c3, after his wife, Lori Sullivan, passed away on April 11, 2019, to honor her legacy of giving, kindness and love.
“Lori was selfless - a great daughter, sibling, friend, and mother," Petruno said. "Together we shared an unbelievable bond of love and I refuse to let her passing go unnoticed. Lori was a military mom, our son Robert currently serves in the special forces in the U.S. Army – I feel this is a great way to support these families and carry on her legacy of giving back to those in need… Lori would be so proud of the charity we selected."
The evening of the event, U.S. Retired General Hutmacher and a Gold Star family member will speak on behalf of the Special Operations Warrior Foundation.
Registration includes a complimentary beverage cart, food stations throughout the course and a hole-in-one contest with an opportunity to win a car.
On Feb. 5, Sheriff Rick Staly visited three local schools to present three exceptional students with awards for being “Great Kids” throughout January. These are the very first Great Kid awards of 2020.
“This is a wonderful tradition that we started in 2018, and it allows us to meet and recognize some extraordinary kids doing great things in our community and in their schools,” Staly said. “We have some really great kids in Flagler County and it is an honor to give them an award for all they do.”
Bruce Higgins is a committed, dedicated student at Wadsworth Elementary, a safety patrolman who is a great role model to his peers, always willing to help others in need.
Nigel-Ginola Njok is a student at Imagine School at Town Center with outstanding grades and helps the younger students with all of their projects. Nigel is also a safety patrolman for the school and works as a teacher’s aid.
Seth Santiago is a student at Matanzas High School. Seth always maintains a positive attitude and great relationships with MHS staff and peers and has a great work ethic.
Hammock Dunes Cares recently donated a $5,000 check to the Disabled American Veterans Chapter 86.
Vera Polkinghorne, 90, of Vero Beach, Florida, died Feb. 4, at Green Gables Assisted Living Facility. Arrangements are under the direction of Millennium Cremation Service, Vero Beach. Condolences may be shared online at www.millenniumcremationservice.com.
Shepherd of the Coast Lutheran Church, located at 101 Pine Lakes Parkway S., Palm Coast, has begun Stephen Ministry, a ministry that equips laypeople to provide Christian one-to-one care to those experiencing difficult circumstances.
Stephen Ministers receive 50 hours of initial training in important caring ministry skills and concepts. Shepherd of the Coast held the first session of training on Jan. 7, for six persons whose training will continue for the next five months. Stephen Ministry is confidential ministry: the identities of those receiving care and what goes on in the caring relationship will remain private.
