The Glass Ceiling Hair Salon & Boutique opens in Flagler Beach
Janet Scott, a local resident since 1964, has opened The Glass Ceiling Hair Salon & Boutique in Flagler Beach.
“I have been cutting, coloring and styling hair since 1970,” Scott said. “It’s a passion of mine.” She had been searching for a location in Flagler Beach, and when she saw the corner spot in the two-story peach building in downtown with good lighting, she fell in love with the space.
The 900-square-foot salon has six stylists with over 195 years of combined experience. They offer “wine time” and like to celebrate holidays at the salon. They are currently seeking booth renters and commissioned-based hair stylists.
Stylists include Scott, Lindsey ‘LuLu’ Crosby, Lori Anders, Anna Marie Dipolliti, Keelyn Eickert, Abby Munroe and Rebecca Long.
The Glass Ceiling Hair Salon & Boutique is located at 213 S. Second St., Unit 10, on the second floor. Hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Call 693-5007.

Florida Hospital Volusia/Flagler Names Internal Communication Manager

Kelsi Gulig has been selected to serve as the internal communications manager for the five hospitals in Volusia and Flagler counties. She will be responsible for developing a strategic communications program that engages employees, physicians and volunteers. Gulig has been at Florida Hospital Memorial Medical Center for three years, starting as a marketing coordinator and progressing to the role of senior marketing strategist. Gulig, a Port Orange resident, graduated from the University of Florida with a Bachelor of Science in public relations and a Master of Business Administration from the University of South Florida.

Smoothie King celebrates its grand opening

Smoothie King enjoyed a successful grand opening on Wednesday Sept.3 at their new location, 220 B Palm Coast Parkway NE. Amongst those who have taken in the new smoothie shop are the entire Matanzas football team. “I’ve always wanted to start a new business,” owner Christine Kraus said. “I’m very health based myself, and I think Palm Coast needed something healthy.” Other than the football team, Kraus said that dance parents have made Smoothie King their new favorite smoothie shop, due to her healthy options. “We have a lot of electrolytes, so the parents bring them here rather than other places that aren’t so healthy,” she added. Dr. Jenn Thornton Joins Parents Working with Boston Children’s Hospital

Dr. Jenn Thornton, owner of Palm Coast Chiropractic Center, has joined 20 other parents who are working with the pediatric cardiologists from Boston Children’s Hospital to get the Melody valve approved by the Food and Drug Administration.
The Melody valve was designed for the pulmonary position, but over the last four years it has been used to replace severe failing mitral valves in children. The melody valve does not require traditional blood thinners like Coumadin or frequent blood draws. It also decreases the amount of open heart surgeries, because the valve can be ballooned in a catheterization lab.
At 17-months-old, Dr. Thornton's son was diagnosed with Shone’s Complex, a multi-heart valve defect. “As you can imagine, this is a matter very close to me,” Dr. Thornton said. “No one suggested the Melody valve when Cooper was diagnosed; I found it when I was doing research on his condition," Dr. Thornton said that it has saved Cooper’s life. "If we can educate people and get the technology approved, it could save millions of other children’s lives,” Dr. Thornton added. She also said that Cooper, now 4-years-old, had a recent check-up and is doing very well.

Local Women & Children’s Mission Moves to Permanent Location

A local mission that helps children and families in need in Flagler County has moved to a new location. Emmanuel’s Closet of Parkview Baptist Church has moved to Parkway Plaza at 1000 Palm Coast Parkway, Unit 107, just a few doors down from Grace’s Place. Their Grand Opening will be this Saturday Sept.13, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Local families in need can come and receive clothing free of charge on that day.
“Words cannot express how excited we are to be moving into a permanent location!” Brandi Fowler said, founder of Emmanuel’s Closet. In the past they have had the closet at Parkview Baptist Church and were typically open to the public for six days a year, working alongside the church’s Food Pantry. We will now be open more than twenty times per year," Brandi added.
Emmanuel’s Closet was opened in 2012. They provide free clothing and basic necessities to children ages 0-18 years of age, single mothers and the needy in Flagler County. Clothing is donated from local families in Flagler County and then redistributed to other local families who need it the most.
The clothing donations have been being stored at Top Shelf Storage for two years. "On the day the closet was open, a team of volunteers would start at 7 a.m. and fill up as many as four vehicles and a large trailer, full of clothing and bring it to the church,” Fowler said. On a typical giveaway day, this mission provides clothing, shoes and other basic necessities to roughly 200 people in Flagler. They’re expecting those numbers to double at this new location. “This mission wouldn't be a success without our loyal volunteers who work so hard to make it happen” Brandi added.
