FPC rallies to beat Fleming Island in spring game
On the second play of the Bulldogs' spring game against Fleming Island, the Bulldogs bit hard on a play-action pass that allowed the Golden Eagles' running back to slip into the seam and race untouched 79 yards to the end zone. The Golden Eagles scored again on their second drive on a 21-yard run to give Fleming Island a 14-0 lead in the first quarter over one of the most talented defenses in the area.
Did this catch Flagler Palm Coast coach Travis Roland by surprise?
The poor play didn't last long, however.
FPC rallied to defeat Fleming Island 33-21 on the night of Friday, May 18, at Fleming Island High School.
The Bulldogs cut the Golden Eagles' lead to 21-14 by halftime. At the start of the third quarter, rising junior running back Ty Jenkins threw a pass to receiver Tyshawn Blount, who ran it in 70 yards for a score. Jenkins also tacked on a pair of rushing touchdowns, and rising junior quarterback Donovan Montoyo, who threw for 3 yards in the opening half, threw two touchdown passes in the comeback win, including a 40-yarder to starting defensive back Dennis Shorter.
"I was glad to find out that we’re still a resilient bunch," Roland said. "I was happy with our resilience. I was happy with our toughness. I was happy with all that stuff."
