Teachers, administrators, district employees, donors and volunteers lined the walls at the Flagler Auditorium, Friday, Aug. 17. As the music to Sister Sledge’s “We are Family” blasted, members of the Flagler Palm Coast High School class of 2016 were told to look around and recognize how many people are in their support system throughout their time in high school.

This celebration was the culmination of the second-annual Freshman Success Day held at FPC. The entire day was devoted to inspirational and informational sessions for the newest Bulldogs to make sure that they have a positive start to their high school careers. The day included a presentation on athletic expectations and the school’s no-tolerance stance on bullying, tours of the school and classroom presentations by members of the Student Government Association, as well as a mock graduation ceremony in which students signed a commitment to graduate banner.

This year, the school has teamed with Jostens’ Commitment to Graduate program, an initiative to address the growing student dropout rate across America. This research-based initiative also focuses on helping students prepare for the future by setting a career goal beyond high school, which might include trade schools, the military or college.

Included in the program is a commitment-to-graduate contract. Students who return their contract in four years, at graduation practice, will receive cash.

Perry challenged the students to frame their signed graduation contracts and hang them in a place of honor in their homes. In four years, each graduate will be able to replace it with the real thing.
