We have seen the republican field get crowded quickly in the race to be Flagler County’s sheriff, but the Democrats have not raced at the chance to challenge incumbent James Manfre — until today. Retired Flagler County Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Larry Jones is officially in the hunt.
The following is adapted from a press release sent to the media today:
“Flagler County is facing many unique issues in regards to an increased crime rate and decreased morale of all employees. Moving the Sheriff’s Office in the right direction to ensure the safety and security of all Flagler county residents is paramount and that is why I decided to run,” Jones stated.
Jones is a seasoned law enforcement leader with over 30 years of law enforcement experience in Flagler County, including two years as second in command of the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office Palm Coast precinct.
“I want to make sure we have a Sheriff’s Office that is not only transparent for our citizens but one that is managed fairly and above reproach. This creates trust and confidence in our staff and ultimately our community,” said Jones, who was the initial point of contact for the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office-Palm Coast precinct.
He adds, “I believe that our children are our future, and we must invest in them early so they are not negative products of circumstance. My commitment to this idea is from my annual Christmas with a Deputy program, which I started in 2008. I had a vision to help our children and started this successful program with my own funds. We have now served well over 1,000 kids to date.”
Jones has a vested interest in the safety and security of Flagler County.
“I have raised my children here and grandchildren as well. There is nothing more paramount than making sure that citizens not only trust their Sheriff’s Office but feel comfortable enough to engage with deputies. Our Sheriff’s Office is only as strong as the community that supports us,” said Jones.
“I am looking forward to continually serving the citizens of Flagler County as your Sheriff. As one team working together we can forge all experiences and ideas together to make one viable community we can all be proud to call home," he said.
The retired sergeant started his law enforcement career in Flagler County as a corrections officer. On Oct. 8, 1984, the late Sheriff Robert E. McCarthy hired Jones as a correctional officer. He enrolled in St. Augustine Technical Center/Correctional Officer Academy, St. Augustine, where he received his certification as a Correctional Officer. In April 1985, Jones was assigned to the road patrol division. He enrolled in the Daytona Beach Community College Law Enforcement Academy where he graduated and received his law enforcement certification. During his career with the FCSO, the Bunnell native served as a School Resource Office in the Flagler County schools. His experience also includes his assignment to the agency’s Drug Interdiction Task Force. Prior to his retirement, Jones served as second in command at the FCSO Palm Coast substation.
He also continues to own and operate his own business in Flagler County which he created in 1997.
