Flagler County Land Management, with the help of community volunteers, has been hard at work in Betty Steflik Memorial Preserve removing Brazilian pepper trees, an invasive plant species.

“Land Management Specialist Robert Detherow led a dedicated group of volunteers who worked for two weeks removing Brazilian pepper trees from along the trails and natural areas of the park,” said Environmental Projects Supervisor Michael Lagasse.

The piles of brush left the in park on the eastern portion of the parking lot are a visible result of the work accomplished. Once the brush has dried, it can then be disposed of properly.

Land Management credits the success of this project to the city of Flagler Beach, as well as the Flagler Palm Coast Kiwanis which sent a crew of volunteers through Flagler Volunteer Services, and the Flagler County Parks and Recreation staff.

“There is more work to do so additional volunteer work days are being planned,” said Lagasse. “We greatly appreciate, and rely upon, the volunteers in our community for these projects.”

For future Land Management volunteer opportunities, please contact Michael Lagasse directly by phone 386-313-4064, or email [email protected].
