Flagler Technical Institute to be renamed Flagler Technical College

The name change will help the institute attract students and compete with private, for-profit schools, FTI Director Renee Stauffacher said.

Flagler Technical Institute, the technical school run through the Flagler County School District, plans to change its name to Flagler Technical College.

Of the 48 public post-secondary technical institutions in Florida, 43 have already renamed themselves as a "college."

Of the 48 public, post-secondary technical institutions in Florida, FTI Director Renee Stauffacher told Flagler County School Board members on June 2, 43 have already renamed themselves as a "college," and FTI is one of the five that remains to do so.

"This name change would help give validity to the status of our career certificates, and it would also help parents and students understand articulated college credit, which is already a part of our certificate programs as well as the industry certifications that students earn through FTI," Stauffacher said.

The change will also help the school compete with private, for-profit technical schools which already use the name "college," and will help FTI connect with graduate of local high schools, she added.

So far, FTI has taken some initial steps for the name change, including presenting it to the School Board attorney and to the School Board as part of a five-year plan as well as during the June 2 workshop.

The board will have to vote on the proposed name change during a future board meeting.

If the School Board approves it, the name change will be submitted to the Council on Occupational Education for approval, then the process of creating a new logo will begin. The school intends to do that through a student challenge for its digital design students, Stauffacher said.

School Board members expressed support for the change.

"We’ve talked about it for many years, and I’m glad to see it’s finally coming here," School Board Chairwoman Janet McDonald said. "It will be something to look forward to and start the new year."
