After adding 131 members during the recent home show at Flagler Palm Coast High School, the Flagler County Tea Party Movement has grown to a membership of more than 1,000, at 1,015.

“I think it’s grown so fast because we’ve tapped into a common concern that residents of Flagler County have, which is runaway government spending,” Chairman Tom Lawrence said. “Most of that’s in Washington, but it also applies to the state and to our local government. We want to see more limited government, and we want to see one that abides by the Constitution and what our founders have to say. And I think those are the common themes just about everybody in the tea party feels.”

In a recent e-mail to the membership, Lawrence wrote: “Our goal is to keep growing by holding lively meetings, events and rallies and to go into the 2012 election under a full head of steam so we can complete the job of taking back America.”

The group is also dividing into campaign committees to attend meetings of the School Board, Flagler County Board of County Commissioners and the cities of Palm Coast, Bunnell and Flagler Beach.

“With this coverage, we can keep track of critical issues and be able to influence the budgeted millage rates for 2012,” Lawrence wrote.

According to the e-mail, the group also took a show-of-hands vote at a recent meeting, indicating that about three-fourths of the local tea party is opposed to building a City Hall.

At the March 1 City Council meeting, the group plans to present a petition requesting the city add the City Hall issue to the ballot in November, as well as to offer tours of the current facilities to residents.

The next tea party meeting is 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 15, at the FPC cafeteria. Krisanne Hall will speak about First Amendment rights.
