Flagler students outperform state average in state-based testing for 2017-18

Students in Flagler County have scored higher than the state average in all state-based testing for the 2017-18 school year, according to a news release by the Flagler County School District. Scores were released from the following assessments:

  • English/language arts Florida Standards Assessments in grades 4-10.
  • Mathematics FSA (non-end of course exams) in grades 3-8.
  • Algebra 1 and geometry FSA for all grades.
  • Civics, biology 1, U.S. history Next Generation Sunshine State Standards for all grades.
  • Statewide science assessment NGSSS for grades 5 and 8.

Highlights from the district include:

  • Grades 3, 4, 6, 7 and 8 are above the state percentage passing non-EOC mathematics FSA (scoring level 3 or higher).
  • Grades 3, 4, 6, 8, 9 and 10 are above the state percentage passing ELA FSA.
  • Algebra 1, geometry and U.S. history EOC scores are above the state percentage passing.
  • Geometry is above the state percentage passing and increased 7% over last year.
  • Grade 8 science is up 8 percentage points and is 12% higher than the state average.
  • Grade 5 science increased by 3%.

In addition, grade 5 science at Belle Terre Elementary jumped 15%, grade 4 ELA at Wadsworth Elementary increased by 6%, grade 8 science at Buddy Taylor and Indian Trails Middle increased by 8% and 12%, respectively. Geometry at Flagler Palm Coast High is up 16%, and grade 9 ELA at Matanzas High increased by 6%.

“I am very proud of our students, teachers, administrators and parents for putting in the hard work this past year,” Flagler Schools Superintendent James Tager said in a release. “We never want to be satisfied, but as we head into our next school year, I’m confident our students are primed to make additional gains.”
