The life science classes at Flagler Palm Coast High School’s i3 Academy are currently building monofilament fishing line collectors for Flagler County. These fishing line collectors are made out of PVC pipe and will be placed at different locations within the county.

When fishing lines are disposed of improperly, wildlife is put at risk. Birds, fish and turtles can get trapped in fishing lines, leading to starvation and injury. Each year over 100,000 animals die because of marine debris.

Not only will fishing lines harm animals, but also the land. Fishing line can take 600 years to break down in freshwater. When fishing line is thrown away it ends up in the environment through landfills.

“This project is a piece of the Forever Flagler Environmental Science Project,” said teacher Andrew Medearis. "Our i3 marine and environmental science students want to plan and make changes in the Flagler County community."

The Forever Flagler project encourages people to dispose of waste line into the fishing line collectors. Other types of trash should be recycled or otherwise disposed of properly; the collectors are for fishing line only.
