Matanzas High School Principal Dr. Earl Johnson, and Assistant Principal Kenneth Seybold, have been named Flagler Schools’ Principal and Assistant Principal of the Year.

“We are blessed to have so many wonderful administrators in Flagler Schools,” Schools Superintendent Jacob Oliva said. “Everyone is deserving of a special recognition. Our committees had a very difficult job of narrowing down to our two final candidates.”

Johnson begins his second year at the helm of Matanzas High School.  He began his career in education in 1989 in Volusia County. He’s been a math teacher, assistant principal and principal during those 27 years.

“I’m excited and shocked over this,” Johnson said. “But I’m only as good as the people around me.”

Seybold, assistant principal is one of those “around” Johnson. He begins his 31st year in education – 23 of those with Flagler Schools.  He has been assistant principal at MHS since the school opened in 2005, and also served as the athletic director until 2012. Seybold said he counts seeing the school go from the blueprints to an actual campus as one of the highlights of his long career. He has also been recognized by the Special Olympics of Florida, with the Marilyn Grigsby Award in 2010.

Johnson and Seybold will compete for the statewide   Principal and Assistant Principal of the Year.
