A dilapidated running track at Flagler Palm Coast High School will soon be replaced with a new one.

The Flagler County School Board voted at a Tuesday night School Board meeting to approve a contract with Beynon Sports Surfaces to reconstruct it.

“The track at FPC has been in need of repair for about a year and a half,” said Plant Services Director Walt Fischer.

The uneven surface has led to injuries, he said, but there’s no easy fix because the track’s rubber surface has delaminated from the asphalt underneath.

“We’ve made five or six different kinds of repairs, and they last so short a time that it’s no longer beneficial to continue just repairing it,” he said. “We’ve had multiple contractors and multiple engineers look at it, and there is no good fix for the track.”

The problem is moisture, Fischer said, which has eaten away at the track and left the surface uneven and worn gaps between the surface and the asphalt.

The new track would be urethane-based instead of latex-based, Fischer said, and should hold up better in a wet environment.

It will also be 1.5 inches higher than the old track and have a greater slope to allow it to shed water more efficiently. The planned 2% slope is the maximum allowed by the NCAA.

Work on the new track, expected to cost $271,931, will begin in November and finish during or soon after winter break.
