The Flagler Historical Society is taking a run back through time on July 28, and they are inviting a bus full of passengers to travel with them.
“Everyone in Flagler and Bunnell should know there is a lot of history here,” Bill Ryan, a historian and guide for the bus tour, said. “In fact, you can even argue that we have just as much if not more history then even St. Augustine… We would love if everybody could come, but we only have one bus to travel with, so making a reservation is important.”
The historical tour through Flagler County consists of just over four hours and over 100 miles of travel through historic landmarks that explain the history of Flagler from the present day to as deep as the American Revolution in the eighteenth century.
“There’s so much history it’s just about impossible to cover it all in one tour,” said Ryan. “To learn about the history and know just how deep it goes, you just have to see it, and through our bus tours, you can.”
Highlights of the tour include a stop into Espanola, where Ryan says many of the railroads used to be stationed upon until Henry Flagler created his wide-open railroad and flushed away the railroads formally used.
Also on the tour, Ryan says the bus will be going through Old Kings road, where the short route through Flagler used to play role of the main road throughout Florida and the present-day woods surrounding the road used to be a wide field of sugar cane harvested by the many African American slaves who Ryan also includes created much of this land we live on today.
Other parts of the tour include stops through Bing’s Landing, Flagler Beach, south to Korona and St. Mary’s church, the Masonic Cemetery, and much more beyond those destinations.
“The main purpose why we at the historical society do these tours is so that we can orient people throughout the area that there was and still is history here… just to be aware of what was here, and be able to appreciate it,” said Ryan.
Ryan also said even if you miss the chance to go on the bus tour on June 28, there’s no need to worry because the historical society takes their audiences through their tours the second and fourth Tuesday of every month.
The bus tour starts at 10 a.m. at the Holden House in Bunnell but Flagler Historical Society recommends you get there thirty minutes prior.
