The 2011 version of the National County Health Rankings was released Wednesday, March 30, and Flagler County’s health department was ranked 17th out of 67 counties, down from last year’s ranking of No. 13.

“The rankings (conducted by the University of Wisconsin and funded by the Robert Woods Johnson Foundation) show Flagler County that where its residents live, learn, work and play matters to their health,” said Patrick Johnson, Flagler County Health Department administrator.

The numbers in the rankings show that multiple factors influence health, Johnson said.

According to the results, Flagler County has less premature death (death under the age of 75) than the rest of the state.

Conversely, Johnson said, the data shows 27% of adults under the age of 65 in Flagler County are without health insurance; 17% of children in Flagler live in poverty; 22% of adults still smoke; and 26% of adults are obese.

Also in the data, 85% of Flagler County students graduate high school while the state rate is 65%. The single-parents household rate in Flagler is 30% compared with Florida’s rate of 35%. The violent crime rate is 284 compared to Florida’s 706. A violent crime is represented as an annual rate per 100,000 population, and described as offenses that involve face-to-face confrontation between the victim and the perpetrator, including homicide, forcible rape, robbery and aggravated assault.

“The goal of the rankings is to motivate communities to develop programs and policies to address factors that influence a county’s overall health,” Johnson wrote in an e-mail Wednesday.
