Justine Wintersmith has teamed with the city of Flagler Beach to host a series of fine arts festivals in Flagler Beach.
Flagler Fine Art Festivals will be 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. every third Sunday of the month from Feb. 17 to July 21, at Veterans Park.
These juried festivals will focus on fine art, instead of arts and crafts, which several shows already feature.
Flagler Fine Art Festivals were created with the strict definition of the term “fine art” in mind. Fine art, as defined by the festival blog, is “a visual art considered to have been created primarily for aesthetic purposes and judged for its beauty and meaningfulness, specifically, painting, sculpture, drawing, watercolor, graphics and architecture.”
The show is seeking artists for individual festivals and also season artists, who will show at all six festivals. Approved full-season artists who prepay before Jan. 31 will receive a discount, their choice of booth location (subject to availability), and exposure on the festival’s website, Facebook page and e-newsletter.
“What I’ve discovered in this area is that there is a lot of talent that has yet to be really discovered,” Wintersmith said. “That’s what we’re trying to do is to create a venue and a supportive environment to expand their audience.”
Although the festivals are meant to be a venue to show work, Wintersmith made the point that they are supplemental to galleries.
“I really believe art is important, especially with all the ugliness going on in the world,” Wintersmith said. “I feel like art is the antidote — we are trying to shine the light on what is good in the world, and we very much need that.”
Wintersmith hopes to shine additional light by including performing arts in the festivals as well as a collectors club.
To promote the shows, Flagler Fine Arts Festival is holding a poster contest with an entry deadline of Jan. 31. The winning artist will receive $200 cash prize, exposure, plus a full-season booth space at the festival. To enter the contest, visit www.FlaglerFineArtFest.com.
