The Flagler County Public Library is taking a stand against bullying — and trying to teach kids to do the same — with its Take a Stand Against Bullying Day on Sept. 21.

The day’s events include comedy and music routines by Jacksonville-based magician Mark Alan and a film about a ninth-grader who devises a clever way to get back at his tormentor.

“October is actually bullying month, but we decided we’re not going to wait,” said Flagler County Public Library Young Adult Coordinator Sharon Fiske, who devised this year’s anti-bullying program with Children’s Librarian Theresa Owen.

“Bullying is an issue that goes on 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, and this is an issue we wanted to attack just as soon as school started, because kids have problems even on the bus, or waiting for the bus," she said. “Kids tell us stories every day about what’s going on.”

The program is sponsored by the Friends of the Library. It will begin at 11 a.m. in the library’s Garden Room with Alan’s presentation and continue with the film at 1:30 p.m. in the meeting room.

Fiske said schools have told their parent-teacher associations about the program, and she hopes for a good turnout. “It is a serious topic, and hopefully something will sink in,” she said.

She wants to make sure kids get the message. “Nobody deserves bullying,” she said. “Don’t be just a bystander. If you see somebody being bullied, take a stand.”

The Take a Stand Against Bullying Day program will begin at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 21, in the Flagler County Public Library at 2500 Palm Coast Parkway. To learn more, call 446-6763.
