County officials are preparing for the arrival of Hurricane Dorian as if it were a Category 3 storm, according to Flagler County Emergency Management Director Jonathan Lord.

“We always like to error on the side of caution,” he said during a webinar on the afternoon of Wednesday, Aug. 28, at the Flagler County Emergency Operations Center.

The storm, which is currently projected to be a Category 2 hurricane, is expected to make landfall near Central Florida on Monday, Sept. 2. Lord said sustained tropical storm-force winds can be expected as early as Saturday afternoon.

Here's what you should do to be prepared:

  • Officials are expecting a high tide, so make sure your well-stocked with supplies for up about five to seven days.
  • Sandbag stations will be available at the Malacompra south beach parking lot, the old jail site in Bunnell and Hidden Trails Daytona North.
  • Residents who need medical care: sign up for the special needs registry.

In addition, Lord said residents in Zones A, B and C should prepare to be evacuated.

“This is a time for the community to come together,” Sheriff Rick Staly said. “Unfortunately, we’re starting to get used to these hurricanes.”

A call center will be open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 29, and Friday, Aug. 30, and it could possibly be available 24 hours per day. To reach the call center, dial 386-586-5111.
