At a special Flagler County Commission meeting on Thursday, Aug. 29, Emergency Management Director Jonathan Lord informed county commissioners that Hurricane Dorian is projected to be a “catastrophic Category 4 hurricane” by the time it makes landfall in Florida.

Flagler County is very much near the center of the cone of uncertainty.

Lord said the county has a 60% chance of experiencing tropical storm force winds and a 155 chance of experiencing hurricane force winds. In addition, the county is expected to get about 4-to-6 inches of rain and will get a storm surge in the areas east of I-95.

The storm is expected to make landfall by the morning of Monday, Sept. 2.

Public shelters will be open on the morning of Saturday, Aug. 31.

“We don’t want people waiting until the weekend to be prepared,” Lord said.

Commissioner David Sullivan added: “Our citizens need to keep in contact and be aware of all the information that’s being put out because it can change very quickly.”

All vacations and off-days for Flagler County Sheriff’s Office personnel were canceled.

“We don’t need a lot of hurricane parties going on. Residents should not start to relax,” Staly said. “It’s still a very dangerous storm, and we’re going to feel the impact no question. It’s just how bad.”

Flagler Schools Superintendent James Tager said school will be open on Friday, Aug. 30.

Rymfire Elementary will be open as a special needs shelter on Saturday. Bunnell Elementary, which is a pet-friendly shelter, will be open Saturday, as well.

“As a school district, we love the community that we live in,” he said. “We look forward to serving our community during this event.”
