In a case of a little bit of beginner's luck, and a lot of beginner's grit, the 6U Flagler Bulldogs Youth Football team won the Division 2 Indian River Youth Football and Cheer Conference (IRYFCC) championship with a score of 24-19 against the FLA Vikings. The championship game took place at 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 21, in Citra.

Flagler Bulldogs Youth Football is a new tackle football program started this year by Ricshay Nelson Sr. Nelson is the president, with Caleb Barker vice president, Ricshay Nelson Jr. and Marquis Murphy athletic directors. The program had over 80 kids sign up, ages 5-12. The 6U team, for ages 5 and 6, is coached by Caleb Barker and Art Smith.

The young athletes on the 6U team had never played football before this year. They went from their first practices in July, to playing in their first game, still unsure of what to do, to winning a championship, in a few short months.

"It's been a pretty amazing experience seeing them grow," said Ashley Perkins, head administrator. "We call them fearless because no matter how big the other team 6u kids were, the Bulldogs 6u played their hardest."
