A week ago, it looked like Flagler Beach might not be able to schedule a fireworks display for this coming July 4: Its usual provider, Fireworks by Santore, wasn't available to manage the city's show this year, and the city wasn't prepared with alternatives.

But the city has now scheduled a meeting for Monday, May 9, to vote on a proposed contract with North Florida Pyrotechnics, based in Green Cove Springs, for the July 4 fireworks show.

When the city solicited proposals for a July 4 show, according to a May 5 memo to the City Commission from City Manager William Whitson, three compares expressed interest, but only two — North Florida Pyrotechnics and Tampa-based Special FX Wizard — submitted written proposals.

North Florida Pyrotechnics' bid was $1,000 under the city's $25,000 budget for the event (the money comes from a Flagler County Tourist Development Council grant), while Special FX Wizard's was over budget.

North Florida Pyrotechnics' proposal promises a "spectacular 20-minute fireworks display" with shells of up to six inches, weather permitting. The shells are comparable in size to the ones Santore has used in the past, according to an email to Whitson from Police Chief Matt Doughney.

The City Commission will consider the proposed contract with North Florida Pyrotechnics at a special meeting at 5 p.m. on Monday, May 9.
