Fishermen and pier walkers, get ready: Restoration of the Flagler Beach Pier will begin this month.

“There will be a notice to proceed on or about Jan. 20,” City Manager Bruce Campbell said in a Flagler Beach City Commission meeting Thursday evening. “You should start to see tools and equipment deployed at the end of this month.”

City staff held a preconstruction meeting with contractors Wednesday, Campbell said.

Work on the pier will proceed on a rolling schedule, so the pier won’t have to shut down entirely.

But in places, the work might narrow public access to a width of six feet.

Flagler Beach will publish a pier-restoration schedule on its website, Campbell said, so residents who use the pier regularly know what to expect.

But although work will start within weeks, the city is still hoping for extra grant money to cover the cost.

The project was originally expected to cost about $908,000, and a grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency was expected to cover 75% of that.

But the project is now expected to cost about $1.2 million, and although FEMA money will still cover 75% of the project cost, the city will have to come up with an additional $72,000.

The work will restore the entire pier, and not just 75% of it, as initially proposed.

The commission has asked staff to write a letter to Flagler County requesting additional grant money.
