Dorothy Jordan, of Flagler Beach, was a four-time champion at the Ocean Palm Golf Course, including her title in 1992, at 79 years old. She died March 17.

A full-time Flagler Beach resident and staple in the county’s golf community died two weeks ago.

Dorothy Jordan, of Flagler Beach, died March 17, two months after celebrating her 98th birthday.

Jordan was a well-known figure in the golf community. She moved to the area in 1989.

She was a four-time champion at the Ocean Palm Golf Course, including a title in 1992 when she was 79 years old.

Jordan was born in Freeport, Maine, and was a graduate of Freeport High School, the former Maine School of Commerce, in Portland, and attended Boston University.

In addition to Jordan’s golf titles in Florida, she also was a four-time Women’s Golf Champion at Candlewood Lake Golf Course, in Brookfield, Conn., including back-to-back titles in 1988 and 1989.

On July 4, 1998, Jordan accomplished what she considered to be her greatest feat: She drilled a hole-in-one for the second time on the Candlewood course. Jordan used a 9-wood to nail the 84-yard par-three sixth hole. Thirty years earlier, she used a 7-iron.

“I always played golf, not to win against someone, but to better myself at each hole,” Jordan is quoted saying in a recent e-mail by a friend.

“My goal was to become a better player,” Jordan added.
