Flagler County Fire Chief Don Petito, at this morning’s fire briefing, seemed cautiously relaxed.

“Fortunately, I have nothing new to report today,” he said. “Things are remaining calm. There were no new starts (in the past two days).”

He said that one Flagler County task force was sent to Volusia today, to assist in the Little Haw Creek fire.

According to Division of Forestry Information Officer Todd Schroeder, one blaze — the Honey Hill fire — has been extinguished. The county is now down to 12 active fires.

The Espanola fire, he said, increased four acres yesterday, within its containment lines. It now stands at 5,111 acres, and is 50% contained.

The White Eagle fire is 80% contained and in “check status,” Schroeder said. “We’re looking for that fire to be in really good shape within the week.”

Bob Pickering, emergency management technician, reported that, rain-wise, things are looking up.

“There’s a good chance of rain coming up,” he said. As of 9:45 this morning, the National Weather Service reported a 50% chance of precipitation starting Thursday night and extending into the weekend.

But projections change constantly, Pickering stressed. Also, Flagler’s got a long way to go to catch up to its yearly rainfall average.

“There’s still a lot of dry going on out there,” Pickering said, noting that Flagler’s January-to-now rainfall average is 21 inches. This year, Pickering said, we’ve recorded 11.6 inches.

Also, from June 1 to June 21, the average Flagler rainfall is 3.05 inches. This year, we’ve gotten .5 inches, as recorded at the Emergency Services Center.
