FLAGLER COUNTY — Fire conditions in Flagler County have improved over the past few days; however, officials are urging residents not to get complacent.

The following are an adapted press release from the emergency management officials:

Smoke, blown out to sea from Georgia fires and fires in Flagler and Volusia counties, came back to haunt county residents June 21.

Visibility dropped to less than a half-mile, airplanes were required to use instrumentation to land at the Flagler County Airport, and the National Weather Service issued an advisory on the event.

Bob Pickering, of Flagler County’s Emergency Services, said the smoke phenomenon will continue on and off.

“The smoke will be thicker near the beach,” Pickering said. “It is visible on the satellite pictures. It blows out to sea and the afternoon sea breeze pushes it into the county.”

The smoke is not an indication of new fires or the spread of wildfire. The wildfires remained in check throughout Flagler County and no new fires were reported as of noon June 21.

Fire lines hold again in Flagler
Despite dry, hot weather for the second day in a row, and a sea breeze that, at times, reached 15 mph, the fire lines throughout Flagler County held fast June 21.

The National Weather Service is predicting a break in the hot dry weather some time Thursday with moist air from the Gulf of Mexico to be ushered into the atmosphere through the weekend and significant rain fall is in the forecast.

Work continued on the more active fires in Flagler County, particularly the Espanola fire, which is now listed at 5,111 acres. The fire did not breach the lines around it, but burned more acreage within the lines as pockets of the fire heated up and ignited.
