Sean Stewart was arrested June 12 for fleeing officers, one month after having been arrested for the same offense.

On June 12, Flagler County Sheriff's Office deputies were conducting a proactive patrol when they observed a red 2015 Hyundai Sonata, traveling eastbound on Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue with a broken taillight.

Deputies activated their emergency lights and attempted to initiate a traffic stop. The driver of the Sonata, later identified as 43-year-old Sean Stewart, ignored the emergency lights and instead drove through a front yard of a residence at the intersection of Martin Luther King and South Anderson Street, failing to stop at the stop sign.

With assistance from the Bunnell Police Department, the FCSO continued to follow Stewart as he drove recklessly and attempted to evade law enforcement. While following the vehicle, BPD officers observed Stewart in the driver’s seat and recognized him from previous law enforcement encounters.

A short time later, Stewart abandoned his vehicle on South Peach Street and fled on foot.

The FCSO and BPD established a perimeter and began searching for Stewart. While searching the area, Stewart came out from behind a building on South Peach Street and told deputies he was looking for his car. He was sweating profusely, out of breath, and missing a shoe.

When questioned by deputies, Stewart said he is in the process of moving from Palm Beach to Flagler County due to probation from a previous arrest. Stewart further stated that he was not the person who was driving his vehicle. Stewart insisted that another man, who he could not identify, was the driver. When deputies asked Stewart why he would let a man he did not know drive his vehicle he said it was because the man claimed to “know the area.” When asked why he would abandon his vehicle and flee from police, Stewart stated that when the man stopped the vehicle he told Stewart to “run” so he did.

Further investigation revealed that Stewart was currently on probation for an arrest that occurred just one month earlier in Flagler County. During that incident, Stewart was likewise charged with fleeing and eluding as well as possession of marijuana and cathinones. Additionally, his driver’s license is currently suspended.

“This is another great example of agencies working together to prevent crime in Flagler County,” Sheriff Rick Staly said. “ ... Let this be a lesson to offenders: If you run from us, you will just go to jail tired and, in this case, shoeless.”

Stewart was arrested and transported to the Sheriff Perry Hall Inmate Detention Facility. He is being held on a $10,500 bond.
