FCSO Deputy Austin Chewning named ‘Officer of the Year’ by the American Legion

The American Legion also presented Staly with a donation to the Flagler Sheriff’s Employee Assistance Trust.

American Legion Post 115 has awarded Flagler County Sheriff's Office Deputy Austin Chewning its Officer of the Year award. The award was presented to Chewning by Cmdr. David Hammond of the American Legion on Tuesday, Dec. 9. Sheriff Rick Staly was also in attendance.

The American Legion also presented Staly with a donation to the Flagler Sheriff’s Employee Assistance Trust (FSEAT). The purpose of the trust is to provide assistance to FCSO employees during a personal crisis, give support to the families of slain Flagler County Sheriff’s Office deputies and recognize officers killed in the line of duty.

“Deputy Chewning’s hard work and dedication to the community is exceptional,” Staly said. “He is very deserving of this award. I want to also thank the American Legion for their very generous donation to FSEAT. We appreciate the support.”

Congress chartered the American Legion in 1919 as a patriotic veterans organization devoted to mutual helpfulness. It is committed to mentoring youth and to the sponsorship of wholesome programs in local communities. The Flagler post meets the second Monday of each month at VFW post 8696.
