The Flagler County Sheriff’s Office's chief of court and detention services, Daniel Engert, has been asked to be a presenter as a subject matter expert at a national forum supported by the U.S. Bureau of Justice in Washington D.C. on March 11. The 2020 Comprehensive Opioid Abuse Program National Forum will draw approximately 700 attendees from across the country and will provide information on effective, data-driven, and innovative strategies, tools, and programs to support local, state and tribal practitioners in reducing overdose deaths, promoting public safety, and supporting access to treatment and recovery services.

In his previous capacity as the deputy chief at the Niagara County Sheriff’s Office, Engert provided testimony on the national
level at U.S. congressional briefings and at similar forums for the New York State Legislature. At NCSO, Engert partnered with a community provider, BestSelf Behavioral Health, and successfully instituted a full-time substance use disorder treatment program inside the jail facility that gave inmates access to screenings and assessments, education and information, group and individual therapy sessions, medication assisted treatment and hand-off’s to outside treatment providers and services when the inmate was released.

“Chief Engert has already proven to be an asset to the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office and we are very proud of this honor to have him represent us at the 2020 Comprehensive Opioid Abuse Program National Forum,” Sheriff Rick Staly said. “He is a recognized expert in corrections and inmate rehabilitation at the state and national level so it is no surprise that he would be asked to participate in such a critical discussion in our nation’s capital. One of the reasons I selected Chief Engert as our new court and detention services chief was to have him implement similar successful programs in our detention facility.”

Engert joined the FCSO on Jan. 13 after an extensive nationwide search for a new division chief of the court and detention services division. Engert has a wealth of experience in correctional administration and operations from the state of New York. He served over 29 years in multiple leadership positions with the NCSO before joining the FCSO.
