Watching what seemed like an endless amount of rain pour from the sky at the New Smyrna Beach Sports Complex, players and coaches alike had the same thought running through their minds — this game might be postponed again.
“There were definitely thoughts of it,” Roland said. “But God broke the skies, and it all worked out.”
After waiting over an hour to take the field, Flagler Palm Coast (2-0) beat New Smyrna Beach 32-18 on Saturday, Sept. 2. The game was initially schedule for a 7 p.m. kickoff on Friday, Sept. 1, but was postponed due to inclement weather.
The Bulldogs were led by running back Jimmie Johnson, who carried the ball 30 times for 217 yards and two touchdowns, and Ty Jenkins, who totaled 127 yards and three scores.
FPC scored the first 12 points of the game before the Barracudas (1-1) stormed back to tie the game at 18 entering the fourth quarter.
However, with 6:33 left in the game, Bulldogs quarterback Ryan Freeman connected with Jenkins for a 73-yard score, and a 21-yard touchdown run by Robinson put the game away with only a couple minutes to go.
“It was a dog fight,” Roland said. “It was just one of those things where both teams were just trying to get a victory because both teams were excited about the opportunity that they have in front of them and both were just trying to do the best they can do.”
Up next, FPC stays on the road with a matchup against Seabreeze on Thursday, Sept. 7, at 7 p.m.
Led by a fast offense and a dominant defense, First Baptists Christian Academy (2-0) defeated Temple Christian 43-0 on Friday, Sept. 1, in the second game in the history of the Crusaders’ football program.
FBCA quarterback Cole Nailor completed nine of his 12 passing attempts for 112 yards and two touchdowns, Dahrius Bobovcan caught four passes for 59 yards and a pair of scores, and Zayne Smith added two touchdowns on the ground.
Defensively, the Crusaders gave up just 50 total yards to Temple’s offense.
“The offense took center stage,” FBCA coach Charlie Washington said in a release. “[But] game MVP goes to the entire defense for maintaining a shut-out.”
Up next, the Crusaders take on Golden Rule Academy at home on Friday, Sept. 8.
