East Flagler Mosquito Control to propose coverage options for county's west side

The county wants to expand mosquito control, but hasn't yet decided who will provide that coverage.

People who live in Flagler County east of U.S. 1 pay extra an extra tax that's used to provide mosquito control coverage. Those living west of U.S. 1 don't, and therefore don't receive mosquito control.

But west side residents — fed up with the pesky critters — have asked the county for assistance, and the East Flagler Mosquito Control District is looking at options for providing service to the west side.

At a May 3 County Commission meeting, County Administrator Jerry Cameron had proposed hiring Anastasia Mosquito Control, out of St. Johns County, to cover the west side, saying it offered lower prices than the EFMCD. But commissioners had resisted, asking that the county administration get a firm quote from the East Flagler Mosquito Control District, which had not yet been formally asked to provide one.

At a June 7 commission meeting, Cameron asked for more time.

"I have a formal proposal from Anastasia," Cameron said. "But I’ve had some really good discussions with East Flagler, and for the first time they are working on a plan — which is why this was postponed — to have a phased-in coverage of the entire county. I believe that they’re going to come up with a proposal that will be appealing to you."

In the meantime, Cameron said, the administration will look at interim measures to ensure that western Flagler County is covered when the rainy season starts.
