Keansburg, N.J., is a small tourist community with a big need, after Hurricane Sandy demolished homes and left 60% of residence with out power, as of Nov. 6.
What does that have to do with Palm Coast?
Allen and Sue Wheeler, of AW Custom Kitchens in Palm Coast, have an empty box truck. But they hope it’s not empty for long. As announced on a special edition of WNZF’s “Free For All Friday,” the Wheelers will have their truck parked at Palm Coast Ford to gather supplies to bring to Keansburg.
Keansburg Mayor George Hoff was on the radio with Palm Coast Mayor Jon Netts to thank the community.
“It’s almost bringing me to tears to think that people form as far away as Florida care,” said Hoff, who earns his living as a social studies teacher.
Hoff has been overseeing a large volunteer effort that has been serving 1,800 meals per day to residents, who are without basic necessities, from pillows, coats and underwear, to gloves, toiletries and baby supplies. They also need rebuilding materials, such as hammers, nails and chainsaws. WNZF General Manager David Ayres also noted that children need toys and things to keep them occupied and lift their spirits.
The Wheelers are hoping to leave with a full truck on Friday. Bring donations, including used items, to Palm Coast Ford, at 1150 Palm Coast Parkway S.W.
