Thanks to Edy’s Fruit Bars, as of Monday, Nov. 15, the Flagler County Department of Juvenile Justice Council’s Community Garden is now the proud bearer of a mini-orchard.

“We are so excited to be able to plant this fruit orchard here and watch it grow and flourish,” said Meredith Melchior, spokesperson for Edy’s.

The community garden won the opportunity to host the fruit garden in a nationwide online voting contest that took place in the spring.

All the produce grown at the garden is donated back into the community through local food pantries. “This will have a huge impact,” County Commissioner Milissa Holland said.

But the fruit orchard is just the beginning of the impact the garden will have on the community. The group recently received a $5,000 grant to start building a vertical garden. In addition, it is the hope of the program that all the schools in the district eventually receive a garden of their own.
