The D.I.V.A.S. Club raised more than $1,000 for scholarships Saturday, Dec. 8, at its fundraiser dinner, held at the Hilton Garden Inn.

The D.I.V.A.S. Club is a nonprofit organization that aims to empower women through education, counseling and mentor services. D.I.V.A.S. stands for women with devotion, integrity, victory, altruism and strength. Included in its activities are the distribution of clothing, shoes and household items to homeless and needy families and providing free counseling.

The group was founded by Dr. Maria Pinto Barbosa, of Alpha Christian Counseling, who is also a specialist clinical counselor for victims of domestic violence.

“It has always been my greatest passion in life and it led me to empower women to develop their own style of leadership based on a combination of their individual strengths and an understanding of leadership theory and practice,” Barbosa said.

“All of us, no matter how old we are, have a story, and from your testimony you can help another woman,” she said. “It’s amazing when you can guide them to empower themselves and make them more successful.”
