In an event more celebration than board meeting, the Flagler County School Board during its regular meeting time Dec. 19 recognized its teachers and employees of the year and the achievements of student athletes and musicians.

The event was held at the Flagler Auditorium to accommodate the Flagler Palm Coast High School band, which played the school’s fight song and was recognized for earning 15 straight superior ratings at the Florida Bandmasters State Competition.

The band is under the direction of John Seth, the band director; its assistant director is Ryan Schultz.

The district also recognized FPC’s football program, which has had an undefeated regular season — for its first time ever — under the direction of new coach Travis Roland.

Also honored at the event was FPC ninth-grader Micayla Cronk, who is this year’s girls state champion for 100-yard freestyle swimming.

And in a surprise move not included on the evening’s agenda, Flagler Volunteer Services’ Suzy Gamblain and Judy Mazzella recognized  School Board member Colleen Conklin for her efforts coordinating the volunteer response to Hurricane Irma flooding in Flagler Beach.

“An undefeated football season, 15 years of straight superiors, is pretty incredible. And state records — this is amazing,” School Board Chairman Trevor Tucker said to the assembled students, teachers and staff. “We really love what you’re doing here. Continue the good work, students.”
