The district jinx lives on

At last, it seemed like the jinx was going to come to an end once and for all. You know, the jinx that whenever I attend a district championship for either Flagler Palm Coast or Matanzas high schools, they lose?

Well, Thursday night, FPC and Matanzas squared off in a District 4 lacrosse championship.

I was going to cover this game. It was impossible for one of the two area teams not to win.

But late in the week, we shifted around assignments, and fellow sports enthusiast (and better photographer) Shanna Fortier was assigned to the lacrosse game.

I was headed to the softball diamond, instead, to watch the Lady Pirates go for history against Ponte Vedra in the District 4-5A championship.

In the lacrosse game, Matanzas (No. 2 seed) knocked off FPC (No. 1 seed), to claim its first girls lacrosse title.

Across the Matanzas campus, the Lady Pirates softball team couldn’t get the offense going and lost to top-seeded Ponte Vedra.

And so, the jinx lives on. In three seasons, I’ve yet to see either FPC or Matanzas win a district championship game.

Although, as I write this, I remember I’m headed back to Matanzas tonight to watch the FPC boys lacrosse team play in the District 6 championship against Pedro Menendez.

I’m hoping the streak can finally end tonight. I’ll make sure I am rocking my playoff beard for the Bulldogs.

Noble dominates
Matt Noble, a sophomore at Brevard Community College, finished off the season on a high note.

On Saturday, April 14, against Broward Community College, Noble went 3-for-4 with a double, a three-run homer and a solo home run. He had five RBIs in the game.

Then, in the season finale Wednesday, April 18, against Indian River State College, Noble went 5-for-5 with a double, a two-run home run and three singles.

Noble finished the season hitting .333 with seven homers and 25 RBIs.

He was named Brevard Community College’s Player of the Year.

Earlier this month, Noble was honored as the Florida College System Activities Association Player of the Week for the week of March 26 to April 1.

Noble graduated in 2009 from Flagler Palm Coast High School, where he was a four-year starter for former coach Dusty Sims.
