PALM COAST — In addition to City Council member Frank Meeker’s proposal to balance the city’s budget, City Council member Mary DiStefano suggested July 19 that the city should delay improvements to Bulldog Drive.

The plan, she said, is for “a lot of money to be spent on Bulldog Drive. We should reevaluate that.”

The road runs north across State Road 100 from the Flagler County Airport, along Flagler Palm Coast High School and into Town Center. The Town Center development is the centerpiece of the city’s State Road 100 Community Redevelopment Area. In the CRA, a portion of all property taxes are earmarked for future improvements within the CRA — the funds cannot be used elsewhere.

Last year, the city continued to buy property along Bulldog Drive, taking more steps in its plans to transform the intersection into a landscaped entranct to Town Center.

But the land has proven to be costly, in some cases more than double the appraised value. One parcel, owned by Gus Ajram, will likely become an eminent domain case.

DiStefano said: “We haven’t had any major developments there that Bulldog would lead to. I think council needs to reevaluate Bulldog Drive and put it on hold.”
