It wasn’t the Super Bowl, but the Matanzas softball team managed to overcome a 30-minute delay due to a blackout Wednesday night to top Pierson, 8-3, in a nondistrict game.
The Lady Pirates (6-4, 2-2 District 4-5A) plated four runs in the second inning before the lights cut out in the bottom of the fifth innings. After about a half-hour, play resume, and Matanzas finished off the game, scoring four more runs in the top half of the sixth.
Amber Johnson picked up the win, going five innings and allowing three runs on seven hits with three strikeouts and no walks. Nicole Breen came on for the save, pitching two scoreless frames and allowing just two hits.
After the delay, Pierson scored two runs, thanks in part to errors by the Lady Pirates. Coach Sara Novak called her team in after the fifth inning.
“I told them we need to do our job right now and hit in the top of the sixth to put the pressure back on them,” Novak said.
That’s exactly what her team did — scoring four more runs.
“It was the first time we ever had lights go off in the middle of a game, but they worked through it,” Novak said.
Gabrielle Prickett, Christina Reynolds, Marisa Magnuson and Amanda Morea all hit doubles.
Reynolds and Morea each had two RBIs, and Prickett and Magnuson both had one RBI.
Breen hit two singles.
Matanzas will play three games this weekend at a tournament at Bell High School.
