+ Palm Coast man drowns in Intracoastal Waterway

A fishing outing turned tragic Thursday afternoon when a 51-year-old Palm Coast man drowned in the Intracoastal Waterway near 94 Old Oak Drive S.

Flagler County Sheriff’s deputies reported that around 4:05 p.m., Scott Jones had been fishing with friends Bruce Jonas, 61, and Earl Hughes, 51, when Jones decided to go for a swim and jumped into the water. Hughes said it appeared that Jones got caught in the current when he swam to the middle of the waterway and he began showing signs of distress.

Jonas jumped in and was able to get Jones to the shore, but he was not breathing and was unresponsive. Flagler County Emergency services administered CPR and transported the man to Florida Hospital Flagler. Jones was pronounced dead in the emergency room.

“This is a tragic event and our thoughts are with Mr. Jones’ family,” said Flagler County Sheriff James L. Manfre.
