The Rally of the Cure golf tournament raised approximately $6,000, helping the raise breast cancer awareness one putt at a time.
The birds were chirping, and the sun was shining. And around 8:30 a.m. Thursday, April 21, the ping of the golf clubs echoed through the trees as the golf balls were landing on the fairways, at the Pine Course.
The Rally for the Cure golf tournament was under way, which featured 96 players, 16 more players than last year despite a rainout on the original date, said Connie Lynch, co-chairwoman of the tournament.
This was Lynch’s second time organizing the tournament, but she has been organizing a similar tournament for 15 years, in Northern Michigan.
The tournament, which was held to raise money for breast-cancer awareness, raised about $6,000, which was more than last year’s total, Lynch said.
“It’s hard to explain ... but I think the older you get, the more you’re affected by cancer,” Lynch said. “Everyone was there for different reasons, and everyone wants to raise awareness.”
Though no golfer won a free car on either of the two hole-in-one holes, Lynch did say more than $1,000 was raised in the silent auction.
“Overall ... I couldn’t have been more pleased,” Lynch said. Though 112 people were signed up to play originally, Lynch said regardless of the rainout, “it couldn’t have been better.” Lynch also gave kudos to Cindy Jackson, who is the other co-chair of the tournament and pro at the Pine Course.
