Charles Larkin Cowart, who was arrested in September after riding a horse through Bunnell and eluding police, was sentenced Tuesday to 90 days in county jail and three years of drug offender probation after pleading no contest to charges brought against him from the incident.

Cowart, of Bunnell, was intoxicated in September when he eluded police for two hours as he rode a horse through town, according to an incident report. His actions caused a southbound train to slow down, according to deputies. Law enforcement had to direct traffic away from Cowart’s path as they tried to catch him.

When Cowart was asked to come down off the horse and talk to deputies, he became aggressive, reared the horse back and had it run southbound on South Pine Street, according to an incident report.

Eventually, the horse became tired and injured its rear foot, and Cowart fled on foot. When he was finally detained, Cowart said he was on his way to his grandmother’s house in Flagler Beach.

Cowart pled no contest to charges of obstructing an officer without violence and of interfering with railroad tracks or equipment. The state dropped charges of fleeing or attempting to elude and cruelty to animals.
