A local couple were arrested Jan. 10 after a 12-year-old boy saw them having sex on a bench at Joanne B. King Park in Bunnell, according to police reports.

The two — 33-year-old Bunnell resident Connie Nichole Whitaker-Roberts and 37-year-old Palm Coast resident William Joseph Murphy — are each charged with a single count of lewd and lascivious exhibition.

The boy was riding his bicycle through the park on his way home at around 5:24 p.m. Sunday evening when he saw the two, according to Bunnell Police Department arrest reports. He went home and told his father, who called 911 and then went to the park to see if the two were still there.

They were, and when the father arrived, Whitaker-Roberts was putting her pants back on, the father told law enforcement officers. Bunnell Police officers and Flagler County Sheriff's Office deputies came to the park and talked to the couple, who both denied having having sex in the park and initially said they were only kissing on the bench. Later statements by the couple are redacted in the arrest reports.

Police brought the boy and his mother to the park, where the boy identified Murphy and Whitaker-Roberts as the two he'd seen having sex. Both have been arrested multiple times before in Flagler County, Whitaker-Roberts on charges of driving under the influence and battery domestic violence, and Murphy on charges of driving on a suspended license, DUI, domestic battery and probation violation.
