The Flagler County Sheriff's Office's planned $19 million, 51,615-square-foot Operations Center will need an additional secondary building at a cost of $1,271,100.

The county had already included the proposed building in its 5-year Capital Improvement Plan, but has decided to add it now rather than wait. Flagler County commissioners approved it unanimously at a commission meeting the evening of Nov. 15.

"It was only recently determined that the additional purchasing building will be an essential addition to the overall project," Holly Durrance, the county's purchasing manager, told commissioners at the meeting.

The extra building will be a 6,000-square-foot prefabricated metal structure that will house the FCSO's purchasing department and serve as additional storage space. It's expected to be finished in January 2023, a few months after the completion of the main FCSO Operations Center building.

About 2,000 square feet of the metal building will be office space with a restroom, while the remainder will be a warehouse with six overhead doors designed to let vehicles drive in and out.

The Sheriff's Operations Center is under construction at a site off Commerce Parkway, near the State Road 100 Wendy's and the county government's Emergency Operations Center and Government Services Building complex.

It will be 51,615 square feet — about twice the size of the former Sheriff's Operations Center on State Road 100.

The FCSO had evacuated its former Operations Center in June 2018 because of concerns that mold in the building —  a former hospital that sat vacant for years before its renovation for the FSO's use —  was making employees ill.

The Sheriff's Office's staff has been divided between the county courthouse and an administrative building at the county jail since the evacuation.
