Flagler County Commissioners crammed into a storage room of the Flagler County Public Library in Palm Coast Tuesday morning while staff members opened up cupboards — all of them packed — to show them just how tight space in the library really is.

The display was part of a roughly hour-long tour provided by library staff and the Friends of the Library, who have been advocating for an expansion project that would give the library more meeting space and room for collections.

The county isn’t sure exactly how much space the library could gain in an expansion project, said County Administrator Craig Coffey, but it would probably be at least 9,000 square feet, and more if the library added a second floor.

“An addition would probably be about 10,000 square feet,” he said. “This stage is very preliminary.” The library could probably also add parking space, Coffey said.

As things are, said Flagler County Library Director Holly Albanese, the library is packed with books and materials and with community groups that use its meeting room so often staff have a hard time reserving it for themselves. “Our own meeting room is booked so much we can’t even get access to it,” she said.

Library trustee and former county commissioner Alan Peterson said the library could probably expand west into an area that is now used for parking, and possibly around the rear of the building, as well. The next step in preparing for an expansion would be a more detailed anaylsis of the options, he said.
