Down memory lane

2 p.m. Southern Flagler County.

Property lost. A man was showing off his rifle to a friend.

At some point, he stuck the rifle in its case and plunked the case down on the tailgate of his truck. Then he forgot about it and drove away.

He realized his error when he arrived home and the rifle was gone.

He retraced his path, but didn't find the gun and reported it as missing to the Sheriff's Office.

Taking flight

1:01 p.m. 700 block of North State Street.

Fleeing and eluding. There are certain things you don't want to deal with when you rent a car at the airport. You don't want to crash it. You don't want to find that the A/C doesn't work. And you don't want your 20-year-old grandson to take it on a 110-mph joyride with the cops in pursuit.

But that's what happened to a 64-year-old who rented a Ford Mustang at an airport in South Florida.

The car came to the attention of a Flagler County deputy when people noticed it racing against another car on western State Road 100 and contacted the Sheriff's Office.

The deputy saw it speed past just as a witness was describing it. Later, it stopped for gas, and the deputy got a good look at the driver.

The deputy pursued the car south on U.S. 1, but once the deputy activated lights and sirens, the car accelerated to over 110 miles per hour, blew through red lights and crossed the median into oncoming traffic. The deputy backed off.

The car's registration alerted deputies that it had been rented by the grandfather in South Florida; a database search pulled up photos of the man's grandson — the speedster. Deputies signed charges against the grandson.
