An unguarded moment

12:50 a.m. First block of Plantation Oaks Boulevard

Grand theft of a motor vehicle. A security guard at a local development stepped outside his guard shack and started his vehicle to heat it up, leaving the car running with the doors unlocked while he locked up the guard shack.

As he did so, he noticed a white pickup truck with dark tinted windows stop next to his car. A young man stepped out of the passenger side of the truck, got into the guard's car, and drove off, as did the truck.

The guard called the Sheriff's Office. Authorities caught the suspects in Alachua County.

Suspect's lies unravel

7:07 p.m. Intersection of County Road 305 and Canal Avenue

Violation of probation. A deputy stopped a bicyclist for riding at night with no lights, and against traffic. The man said he was riding to the store and would be returning to his home in Bunnell.

Asked for his ID or driver's license, the man gave the deputy his name and date of birth — he said he didn't have an ID — and the deputy ran the man's information and found that the man was on probation.

The deputy noticed that the man had a bag containing several cans of beer — a probation violation. The man said he'd picked up the beer for his roommate.

The deputy contacted the roommate and asked him if he'd asked the man to pick up anything for him. The roommate said no.

The man had also changed addresses, and admitted that he hadn't told his probation officer, as required.

The deputy arrested him. His driver's license was in his pocket.
