Flare in the Air
8:44 p.m. Three Thousand Block of Oceanshore Boulevard. Suspicious Incident. A deputy responded to the area in reference to suspicious incident. Upon arrival, the deputy made contact with a male witness advising that he observed a flame fall from the sky and into the coast, possibly in a downward slope from south of his residence, possibly around Beverly Beach.
Another caller, a female witness, advised she observed light shoot up into the air off the coast at Beverly Beach Camptown. The deputy then responded to that location along with a fire engine and began checking the coast for any signs of ships in distress.
The engine moved locations and responded to Flagler Beach Pier and began checking the area. They advised at 9:34 p.m. that they observed a red or orange flare in the ocean off the coast near Beverly Beach Camptown approximately three to five miles out.
A Lieutenant (Watch Commander) was also on on the scene at Beverly Beach Camptown and had dispatch notify the Daytona International Airport to check if there had been any aircraft incidents reported to them. The airport reported there had been no incidents reported and that they had one plane in Flagler County but that it did not witness any flares. Attempts were made in contacting Naval Air Station Jacksonville to check any potential military aircraft. Those also resulted in negative results.
The United States Coast Guard was also advised of the incident and given possible location of where the flares were observed. The also advised that they had 14 possible reports in St. Johns County.
At 12:38 a.m. that morning, dispatch received a call back from the U.S. Coast Guard advising treating the case as a distress. The Coast Guard advised that they were en route with a Coast Guard Cutter from Ponce Inlet with an estimated arrival time of one hour and an AC-130 aircraft with an estimated time of one and a half hours.
The Coast Guard also advised that they would be searching a radius of 50 by 30 nautical miles and that the initial flare could have been seen anywhere from one to 50 nautical miles away by sight.
Feb. 1
Ash and Cash
1:55 p.m. First Block of Rymer Lane. Burglary Residence. A deputy was dispatched in regards to a residential burglary. Upon arrival, the deputy made contact with a female homeowner advising that her husband arrived at the residence about 11 a.m. and observed the home had been broken into.
The deputy then made contact with the male homeowner who stated one arrival, he noticed all the lights inside the residence had been turned on. The male also stated he walked into the master bedroom and saw all the drawers open and that the bedroom closet had been ‘rummaged’ through.
The male also stated on the floor by the bed were cigarette ashes. The male then advised that he walked into his daughter’s room to find all the drawers open as well. The male stated he noticed the rear sliding glass door was pried open and that the screen door had been cut and broken.
The only items missing at this time from the home is $150 cash which the female stated she had hid in her linen closet. Due to its obscure location, the deputy asked the female if there was anyone outside of her husband and daughter who knew where the money was, to which the woman replied ‘no.’
The deputy was able to take photographs and attempted to lift fingerprints from the screen door, sliding glass door and drawers in both rooms which met with negative results.
Feb. 1
Petal to the Metal
5:37 p.m. 100 Block of Plain View Drive. Larceny. A deputy responded in reference to a larceny call. Upon arrival, the deputy made contact with a male who advised him of the incident. The male stated his son was at a friends house at about 4:30 p.m. The son left his black and light blue BMX Huffy bicycle outside by the front door and an unknown suspect took the bicycle from the location.
The father stated he thought he saw a teen with mohawk haircut riding his son’s bicycle down the street but did not realize it at the time.
At this time there are no known suspects and no charges filed. The area was checked and met negative results. The father was unable to provide a serial number for the bicycle.
