Two control burns contributed to smoke in residential areas of Flagler County Tuesday afternoon, Jan. 10.

Both fires are 80 acres in size and west of U.S. 1. One is in the northern portion of the county, and the other is south and west of Korona, in the southern portion of the county.

After receiving several calls about the smoke, Fire/Rescue Chief Don Petito announced that prevailing winds are pushing the smoke northward and into the residential areas . Both fires were authorized by the state Division of Forestry and purposely started by a private landowner. They are being monitored and should help reduce the danger of uncontrolled wildfires later in the year.
