Students who believe their performance on the SAT exam was disrupted by School Board member Janet McDonald's defiance of the College Board's mask requirement on Dec. 4 will have an option to retake the test.

McDonald had arrived at the Matanzas testing location before the Dec. 4 exam as students were checking in, and told them that they were not required to wear masks. Many student therefore removed theirs.

But the test is administered by the College Board, and masks are required under College Board rules.

When testing staff contacted the College Board asking what to do, they were told to instruct students to put their masks back on, but not to remove any students or disrupt the test, according to Corinne Schaefer, the College Board’s assistant coordinator for the exam.

The College Board notified families on Dec. 8 that students will be able to retake the test at Matanzas High School on Dec. 18, according to the College Board's media spokesperson.

They will not be able to view their scores on the Dec. 4 exam before choosing whether or not to retake the exam.

The College Board's message to students referred to the incident as a "problem that may have affected some students."

"Because of this, you may choose to either release your score (if you believe your performance wasn't affected) or retest at no charge," the message stated.

Students who opt not to retest will receive their scores several weeks after Dec. 18.
