When Gunnar Hildemann decided to open up a car wash in Palm Coast in 2007, he said, you had to drive miles out of town to get a good scrub.

“Before we opened, folks in palm coast had to drive 20, 25 miles to get any kind of service at all,” he said. “Everything here was very limited.”

The Hildemanns built the car wash with a Caribbean-themed waiting room, large screen TVs, and free wi-fi and coffee, and offered detailing and full-service exterior and interior washes.

“No matter what mood he customer comes in with, when we leave we want them to be happy, no matter what it takes,” Hildemann said.

Usually, he said, they are. He mentioned a recent customer, Arlene Wiley, who’d passed by recently on a trip to Georgia and posted this message on the Coconuts Car Wash’s Facebook page:

“I stopped at Coconut Car Wash on the way to Georgia after vacationing at Daytona Beach. It was an amazing experience. The staff had the most positive and friendly attitude, cleaned every cubic inch of the car, and took so much pride in their work. I've never been to such a rewarding place! Awesome!”

Hildemann said that too often, little local businesses slack off. “They think that no matter what they do, people are going to come back,” he said. “We want them to leave so happy they can't imagine going anywhere else.”
