For the 10th year in a row, the Garden Club of Palm Coast Inc. planted a tree to honor its members who have died in the past year. This year was particularly poignant for members because there were seven former members honored.

The names of Tom Foy, Jim Miskelly, Jim Wilson, Hilda Gottwald, Joan Holzschuh, and Donald and Linda Pierce will soon be engraved on a plaque to be placed at the foot of an 18-foot southern red cedar at Town Center. The tree was purchased by the club and shipped and planted by the city of Palm Coast.

Club President Kathleen Terlizzo presented a replica of the plaque to City Council member Holsey Moorman, who also spoke in a ceremony Friday, Jan. 21, at Town Center.

The tree will be lighted at Christmas time, Moorman said. “It will shelter our children who play in the park.”

The city’s landscape architect, Bill Butler, also spoke and remembered Miskelly, calling him “Mr. Palm Coast.”

Others in attendance spoke about other members who had died, including the Pierces. Wilma Kuhns, Linda Pierce’s sister, traveled from Crescent City for the ceremony and said they were best friends.

“We were so alike but so different,” Kuhns said. “We never had a quarrel.”

Club member Edwina Tabit said Linda Pierce welcomed her to the neighborhood when Tabit first moved in. “She extended herself to everyone in the neighborhood,” Tabit said.
